Russell Stover Peanut Butter egg review

Easter is coming up fast and I've got great new reviews planned for you EVERY DAY from now until Easter! So please check back here daily. Today we're kicking things off by taking a look at the Russell Stover Peanut Butter egg.

Ok, for some odd reason it technically doesn't say 'egg' anywhere that I can readily see on the packaging, BUT we all know what this is. While many of us may think only in terms of Cadbury when it comes to creme eggs at Easter, Russell Stover has in fact been putting out a decent showing of Easter chocolates for a while now. Sure we know them well from their boxed chocolate fame, but can they hold up under the pressure of Easter, especially with a product that seems suspiciously like a knock off? Let's find out...

The packaging is a nice and bright shiny blue, with eggs and bows on it. Obviously this is very thematically driven, and I appreciate that its being direct. I like the idea of a peanut butter egg, especially since Cadbury doesn't make one. I am a pretty huge peanut butter junkie so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for something special here. Although I will note that I'm a little weirded out by the lack of the word egg on the packaging.

Opening up the foil we find a nice egg, maybe slightly smaller than your standard Cadbury egg, but still a reasonable size. I like the patterning on it, very festive, and the chocolate smells good. There is some unfortunate seepage out of the side of this egg, and that's a real shame since it automatically makes me feel like they're not taking much care in this chocolate. They obviously need to use stronger glue to hold the seems together, because frankly that's unacceptable. For you dear reader I will continue though.

Biting into the egg is a definite surprise. Didn't someone say peanut butter?! 'Cause there sure isn't any peanut butter here! This is so weird... The filling is like gooey sugar slop made to roughly taste like peanut butter. I was expecting something akin to a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and instead I'm getting runny 'peanut-like' goo. This is seriously unimpressive... In fact its worse than that, its annoying. I'm not looking for something amazing here, just passable. The biggest dog at the show (Cadbury) doesn't even make this flavor egg. All Russell Stover has to do is be passable and they'll get my money, but this is aggravatingly bad. I am very disappointed. The chocolate shell is fine, totally passable, but I just can't get behind this super sugary wannabe peanut stuff. The taste itself is very sweet, but it isn't entirely terrible. I'm just upset because I was sold a bill of goods and Russell Stover failed to deliver.

Do not buy this one, its not worth it. Go get a real peanut butter cup instead.
