Russell Stover Caramel Santa review
Well its definitely getting closer and closer to that time of year, and today I've got another holiday chocolate review for you. We're looking at the Russell Stover Caramel Santa.
So this should be a relatively simple review, this is one of the many impulse item candies you'll see near the checkout this holiday season. And its pretty simple in concept too: chocolate and caramel. I firmly believe all you really need for a solid candy experience are these two items. Seriously, chocolate and caramel are so simple but can be so good when done right... lets just hope Russell Stover has it down this time.
Looking at the packaging I have to say I'm a fan. Its simple but effective. This is a chocolate Santa. I like that Santa is wearing the long robe / coat instead of Santa pants. It just seems more classic. And hey is that a spear Santa is holding?! Well it may look a bit like it but instead I think its probably a walking stick. This Santa is old school. No flying reindeer for this guy.
Other than that the package is pretty straightforward. Santa is walking into a Green night, atop a snowy field. Interesting that this actually isn't called a Caramel Santa on the packaging, but just Caramel... I guess they know what they want to emphasize. However if you look at the display pic above that I snapped in the store on the box it clearly says Santa. No big deal, I just thought it was a bit odd. Also and finally of note, there is a small message on the back of the package saying this is made with "real chocolate".
Getting into the packaging though we find that this chocolate looks more like some sort of vaguely person-shaped blob instead of anyone specific (much less Santa). I don't want to be disappointed by this... I mean I get it. But I still wish they had done something more with the look of this chocolate.
I will say this though, its thick, and smells good. Also the wavy lines across the top of the chocolate are nice, just not overly Santa-esque.
Biting into this chocolate though soundly does away with any lingering disappointment over the cosmetics. This is good. Seriously, its really good. The caramel is soft, gooey but not too sticky. Its not going to get overly stuck in my teeth, and it has a creamy, ever so slightly melty quality that about it helping it blend well with the chocolate. This is just about exactly the best way to eat caramel. Melted and mixed in with good quality chocolate. Everything here is really good.
Look, I won't say this is great. Its not Lindt, but it is better than most standard American chocolate fare, and for a quick deal at the checkout I don't think you can possibly go wrong here. Also these are the kind of things that go on super sale after Christmas, so keep an eye out. Even if you're paying the full dollar (ish) price though I think this is definitely worth the time and money. Check it out.

Russell Stover Caramel & Marshmallow Pumpkin review
Russell Stover just loves the holidays, and that's why we've got another review from them for you today. Its the Russell Stover Caramel & Marshmallow Pumpkin.
Here we are once again with a Russell Stover Pumpkin candy. I've generally been a fan of their marshmallow treats, and I'm hoping for something good here. Looking at the packaging I'll say I'm finding it pretty delightful. That is a very happy pumpkin. He's smiling, he's jovial, you can just tell he's glad to be there sharing all his pumpkin goodness with the world. It looks like it must be the magic hour in the pumpkin patch as well, with a yellow orange sky, and a few stars peeking out. This is a good time waiting to happen, and I am thrilled to dig in.
Getting the chocolate out of the wrapper you can see that while it doesn't have an actual jack-o-lantern carved into it, there is certainly some specific pumpkin-y qualities to be found. I really like how it actually has a round bulging shape, and the vertical lines are very reminiscent of an actual pumpkin. It also smells pretty decent, and despite a small flaw on the back (you can see that in the video review) the pumpkin gives a very good overall impression.
Biting into the pumpkin the most important and immediate sensation is the caramel. This is excellent caramel. The marshmallow has little to do here, in fact it acts more as textural filler to support the caramel. While I have gone on the record that I'm not generally a fan of chocolate bar marshmallow, I think really the issue is that the marshmallow needs to be paired with something else to support it. In this case the caramel is really great, and ties this entire chocolate together. Oh there is a chocolate vibe as well here, but the chocolate isn't mixing too much into the caramel as it does with some higher quality bars, instead its just nice;y there adding an extra bit of separate flavor.
This pumpkin, is worth it for the caramel alone though, and I have to say I am looking forward to trying more of this moving forward. Hopefully I'll have a chance to grab one of the pure Russell Stover Caramel Pumpkins somewhere. For now this will definitely do though. This is a solid recommend.

Russell Stover Milk Chocolate Pumpkin review
Here we are once again with a fun Halloween review for you, and today we're looking at the Russell Stover Milk Chocolate Pumpkin.
I've reviewed Russell Stover products here before, and generally they do a good job of it, but this is my first time just reviewing their straight milk chocolate. Does this constitute a review of the base Russell Stover chocolate? I don't know. They might use cheaper or different chocolate in their pumpkins than they do in say their boxed fancy milk chocolates. I just can't say. I think for now though we should just treat this as a one off look at this specific confection.
The design is nice. I like the pumpkin on the package. He's pretty creepy, and the colors are all muted. Especially with the leaves and grass around him it looks like he's still in the pumpkin patch at nighttime. Definitely creepy stuff. Although who would carve and light a pumpkin while still leaving it in the patch is beyond me.
Moving onto the inside of the package we find the chocolate pumpkin itself. This is a rather thin chunk of chocolate, but I suppose it was pretty cheap. And if its rich you probably don't want too much. I like the pumpkin design, and despite a few flaws in the manufacturing it definitely looks like a jack-o-lantern.
The weird thing though is that the pumpkin on the inside doesn't look anything like the pumpkin on the outside. Somewhere along the lines there were some conflicting messages here. Do they want their pumpkin to be scary? or friendly? This guy on the inside is decidedly goofy looking. Frankly I like silly pumpkins like this, but its not at all what sells you on buying the chocolate on the package. Definitely a disconnect.
Getting into the chocolate itself this is pretty much right down the middle of the road alright.. well, maybe its a bit on the better side of alright but its nothing too special. The chocolate has a slight creaminess to it, and its not too sweet which is good. I also like the texture, it melts in your mouth but not too fast. Basically it tastes like ok chocolate. This isn't anything too fancy but its not bad.
Well I'm sorry this one was so anti-climactic but that's just what you get sometimes. I don't think I'll be rushing out to get more of these but I wouldn't say no if one was offered to me again.

Cozy Treats
Alongside the Halloween stuff I saw these new Russel Stover treats that just scream Fall to me. Check these out!
Now I don't know if I've said it on the blog before but I really am a a fan of S'mores, Maybe not quite as much as some peple I know but I'll definitely have one around a campfire if offered,. As for Pecan Delight... well it sure sounds delightful. I like pecans and really like caramel so this chould be a treat I would enjoy very much.
Don't these snacks just make you want to curl up beside a fire? Maybe with a nice mug of cocoa while the first snow comes down. A brisk and cool Autumn evening where you've decided better than to go out. This is exactly the treat I want in my hand when that happens.

Russell Stover Strawberry Cream Egg review
Lets do this one more time shall we... Today I've got some remainder Easter candy for another bonus review, it's the Russell Stover Strawberry Cream Egg.
Despite the fact that they spelled "cream" the proper way instead of "creme" like the other chocolate Easter eggers, I think we're in for a treat here. Russell Stover doesn't have a ton of competition in this arena, unlike their showing on the other egg front. And these confections are more varied, and have less to contend with, so we're already off to a good start.
Let's begin though, as we do, by looking at the packaging. It's pink and green with suitable Easter and strawberry themery involved. A few eggs, a bow, and not much else. Although I can't help but note that "Hand crafted in small batches" is registered (for some reason). And we also learn that this is "Naturally flavored, and covered in milk chocolate." Well, hooray for us...let's just open it and eat it already...
The chocolate itself looks good. It's bigger than it could've been and I appreciate that. It's also roughly egg shaped, adding to the proper thematic motif, And finally I have to say I like the drizzle of chocolate on the top. Sure it's very un-egglike, but it looks good.
Biting into the egg is a great experience. The chocolate is soft and is really just designed to keep the star of the show contained. The strawberry cream filling is in charge here, and it declares itself proudly. There's a gooey-ness and a moistness that suits the egg well. If this was say, as thick in consistency as a box of chocolates version of Strawberry cream it just wouldn't work. This cream is so good because its airy, light, and well flavored.
I know Easter is technically over now, but I really think if you're a fan of strawberry you should check this one out. And hey, if you can't find it, just wait until October and you'll get many, many more Russell Stover products for Halloween.

Russell Stover Peanut Butter egg - video review

Russell Stover Peanut Butter egg review
Easter is coming up fast and I've got great new reviews planned for you EVERY DAY from now until Easter! So please check back here daily. Today we're kicking things off by taking a look at the Russell Stover Peanut Butter egg.
Ok, for some odd reason it technically doesn't say 'egg' anywhere that I can readily see on the packaging, BUT we all know what this is. While many of us may think only in terms of Cadbury when it comes to creme eggs at Easter, Russell Stover has in fact been putting out a decent showing of Easter chocolates for a while now. Sure we know them well from their boxed chocolate fame, but can they hold up under the pressure of Easter, especially with a product that seems suspiciously like a knock off? Let's find out...
The packaging is a nice and bright shiny blue, with eggs and bows on it. Obviously this is very thematically driven, and I appreciate that its being direct. I like the idea of a peanut butter egg, especially since Cadbury doesn't make one. I am a pretty huge peanut butter junkie so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for something special here. Although I will note that I'm a little weirded out by the lack of the word egg on the packaging.
Opening up the foil we find a nice egg, maybe slightly smaller than your standard Cadbury egg, but still a reasonable size. I like the patterning on it, very festive, and the chocolate smells good. There is some unfortunate seepage out of the side of this egg, and that's a real shame since it automatically makes me feel like they're not taking much care in this chocolate. They obviously need to use stronger glue to hold the seems together, because frankly that's unacceptable. For you dear reader I will continue though.
Biting into the egg is a definite surprise. Didn't someone say peanut butter?! 'Cause there sure isn't any peanut butter here! This is so weird... The filling is like gooey sugar slop made to roughly taste like peanut butter. I was expecting something akin to a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and instead I'm getting runny 'peanut-like' goo. This is seriously unimpressive... In fact its worse than that, its annoying. I'm not looking for something amazing here, just passable. The biggest dog at the show (Cadbury) doesn't even make this flavor egg. All Russell Stover has to do is be passable and they'll get my money, but this is aggravatingly bad. I am very disappointed. The chocolate shell is fine, totally passable, but I just can't get behind this super sugary wannabe peanut stuff. The taste itself is very sweet, but it isn't entirely terrible. I'm just upset because I was sold a bill of goods and Russell Stover failed to deliver.
Do not buy this one, its not worth it. Go get a real peanut butter cup instead.

Bunnies
We've already had a look at how many Easter egg chocolates and candies there are at this time of year. Today lets see what we've got in terms of bunnies.
Oddly, iI my local candy aisle, aside from a few outliers there really only two companies in the chocolate Easter bunny game, Russell Stover and Palmer. On with the pictures...
That's all I managed to find in my candy aisle. However I did make a trip out to the bigger Walgreens down the road a bit and found a few more to share...
Do you have any different or special bunnies in your aisle? Let me know in the comments. I think of these I'd probably go with the cookies 'n creme Hershey bunny, the Reester Bunny, or the Russell Stover solid milk chocolate with crispies one.
Question, why are there no licensed bunnies here? You would think at the very least Bugs could lend his face to a chocolate rabbit? I'm not suggesting we need a full run of Watership Down chocolates (that would be depressing), but I'd definitely be inclined to buy a Roger Rabbit, or Bucky O'Hare chocolate.
Think about it...

Hollow = Fail. |
this seems like a good idea though. |
I think this is the one I'd go for. YUM. |
little. |
medium. |
big. |
This packaging makes me angry. Why are they covering the bunny's face??? |
Easter classic |
Ok, not technically a bunny chocolate, but it sure looks good :) |
The only Hershey bunny in the lot. Sounds pretty good. |
mmm PEZ... |
a HUGE bunny! |
Comes with a book! |
Reading and Chocolate bunnies together at last... |
Ahh... good ol' Snapsy the Bunny. |
Is that the Noid?! |
Peanut Butter YUM |
WTF is this?!?! |
It comes in 3 flavors too! |
Is that a bunny? |
