Terry's Milk Chocolate Orange - video review

Today we've got another unique holiday confection to look at, it's Terry's Milk Chocolate Orange.

Definitely interesting and one I remember fondly from my youth. I hope you check it out. For more, please check in on the full written review, or all of our reviews over on the reviews page.

Terry's Milk Chocolate Orange review

Today we've got a fun holiday review for you, this is one that I'm certain a lot of you will have had around this time of year. Let's look at Terry's Milk Chocolate Orange.

Pretty unique in the candy and chocolate world (well until recently) Terry's oranges come in a variety of flavors but this milk chocolate one is the classic. For people out there who aren't in the know about this, its a large ball of chocolate roughly the size of an orange, segmented into slices. A form factor that I really just haven't seen anywhere else? I mean how many people bother to make their fruit flavored chocolate look like the actual fruit? exactly, no one. Anyhow this is milk chocolate infused with orange oil. Another somewhat uncommon choice when it comes to confections. According to the wiki, the product launched in England in 1931, a few years after the now discontinued chocolate apple. Its interesting since its such a large amount of chocolate, and may put people off initially since it costs around $6 (here in Canada at least), but this is certainly a unique product and one well worth looking at.

Before you take the ball out of the packaging though there's one more, very fun thing to do. According to the tagline you "whack and unwrap". During the manufacturing process the chocolate which is supposed to be segmented like an orange gets stuck together, so the loosen the pieces consumers are encouraged to literally hit their chocolate orange on a tabletop or other hard surface to dislodge the slices before unwrapping. Get it? Whack and Unwrap. Its very clever, and gives me one more reason to enjoy this chocolate. Any food that encourages you to play is great in my books. To check out my job of whacking and unwrapping you'll have to watch the video review.

Once you pull the big ball of chocolate out of the package you see that there's some nice orange peel patterning on the outside definitely a nice and somewhat unexpected touch. These things are really pretty classy. And it really smells super orangy.

The segments themselves are also extremely nicely designed. I like the little Terry's logo on each slice, and I especially like the cells of orange flesh sculpted into the slice. its just top notch in terms of quality.

As you can see they are a little on this thin side and have no patterning on the backs of the slices, but the fact that there are a full 20 slices in each orange means you'll be eating this one for a while. I know that as a kid I would love getting a Terry's Orange in my stocking because for one thing it actually managed to last me through until the end of presents. This is one of those chocolates that will definitely give you your moneys worth. (especially if its a gift!)|

Look at how nicely they splay out though. You can actually buy these in "bar" form as well, I think its called Segments, and that will see I believe 6 slices laid together. Not sure if that's actually available here in Canada, it maybe only in the UK. Lets get into this though.

Biting into the slice we find that this is pretty good milk chocolate, not great, but definitely above average, and better than you'll find in most American chocolate bars. The orange flavor is not overpowering, its actually kind of subtle, but very enjoyable.

I can't say enough about how happy and impressed with this form factor I am. These are just so unique, that I really have to recommend it. Thankfully the chocolate is pretty good too. This is something I think you'll enjoy, and will make a great stocking stuffer for anyone on your list.

Terry's has changed hands a number of times over the years, even briefly being re-branded as a Tobler product, but it currently is owned by Kraft Foods (ne Mondelez International), you can find out more about it at their Facebook page.

True Decadance

The Decadent chocolate chip cookies are a Canadian institution. They are in a word Amazing. Unfortunately many foodstuffs (especially ones made like this) don't travel as well as you'd think so aside from a few exceptions the brand is only available in Canada. IF you are not from Canada reading this and ever have a chance to check out a President's Choice (PC) brand product The Decadent chocolate chip cookie should be the one.

There's a bit of info on this cookie on wikipedia, but here's the basics. The PC brand is owned by Canada's largest national grocery chain Lablows, they own stores (under various names) across Canada, and in the 90s, like many larger grocery chains, they launched their in-house brand called Presidents Choice. The Decadent cookie became the cornerstone of the brand, which billed itself as better, and more natural than the wide commercial competitors. The Decadent chocolate chip cookie is made with real butter, not hydrogenated vegetable oil, and it is made with real chocolate chips. It also boasts more than double the chips than the leading national brand. The cookie tastes homemade, with big creamy chunks of chocolate and a crumble you only wish your homemade cookies could have.

According to wiki, within 3 years of launch they became Canada's best selling cookie despite being in only 20% of Canada's food stores. They are that good. And I'll say I remember when these came out. I was in high school, and the entire PC brand blew up. This was a big deal. Anecdotaly I've heard that they apparently based a lot of their innovative approach to creation and marketing from the awesome California based Trader Joes chain.

In my house growing up, like many Canadian families, we literally just ate it up. PC products we're and are beloved by Canadians, and have expanded beyond any other in-house food brand that I've ever heard of... my wife actually has a PC credit card... like from the PC bank...

Now The Decadent itself has expanded beyond just the original chocolate chip cookies. Check out some of these awesome extensions of the brand. Some of these I've had, and others are new to me. Since I've been living out of the country for 10+ years, getting my hands on this stuff again is pretty exciting.

And its not just other variations of cookies. There are also supplies for those more creative chocolate lovers out there.

And of course its also found in the ice cream aisle :)

That's pretty serious stuff, and a great product line-up for a cookie. I'm definitely looking forward to trying all of these decadent treats now that I'm back in Canada. Yum!

Mars - video review

Today we've got another fun one for you, its a look at one of the worlds most beloved chocolate bars, the Mars bar.

For even more on Mars, please check out the written review, or all of the reviews over on the reviews page.

Mars review

Today we've got a real classic chocolate bar for you. Anyone from the UK, Australia, or Canada will certainly know this one. Lets have a look at the Mars bar.

This is of course the signature chocolate from the Mars company. Its simple: chocolate, caramel (at least here), and whipped nougat. The design is elegant and proven since this form has certainly been around for quite a while. I personally have very fond memories of eating Mars bars as a kid. There was definitely a time when this was my all time favorite bar, and while it may have been replaced by others over the years, I can't say I've lost any esteem for this chocolate. Mars bars are simpy put awesome. So spoiler alert: I freakin' love these things.

Looking at the package you can tell they mean business, Black, and Red. This is bold. Its a cursive font, perhaps a bit odd for such a straightforward bar, but Mars is also smooth, delicate. The nougat isn't a hard or chewy experience, its light and refreshingly delectable. To me the packaging strikes the right balance between pronounced and relaxed. Also it stands out in a crowd, very important for people walking the candy aisle.

Lets quickly deal with the confusion over this bar. According to the wiki, Mars was produced in England to be a sweeter version of the Milky Way bar (which is also made by Mars). It isnot to be confused with the European Mars bar, which is closer to an American 3 Muskateers bar. The part that gets more confusing though is the caramel. I'm not sure who said what, or what goes where, but some places seem to have caramel on their Mars bars and some do not. This review is for a Canadian Mars bar, and may not reflect the Mars bar you have in your country...

The bar itself, smells great. Very chocolaty. Slightly smaller than your average American bar, its got a thickness that may others do not. While the US Milky Way bar has some drizzled chocolate artifacing on top that form pleasing lines, I have to say the Mars bars lines are much more... veiny. I suppose thats not a term most would like applied to their chocolate bar, but its the best I can come up with. Still I'm going to try to not hold that against it. The bar is thick, and smells great, I'm looking forward to getting into it.

Biting into the bar totally brings me back to my childhood. Man I ate a lot of fun sized Mars bars on Halloween. Anyhow, this is superb. The chocolate on the outside is seriously thick and rich. Since this is a Canadian Mars bar it has caramel, and the caramel is pretty soft, with a little pull but nothing that's going to get overly stuck in your teeth since it melts away soon enough. I'd say it might be a touch tougher than my perfect caramel, but the caramel melds so nicely with the chocolate nougat that I can't fault it. As you may know from past reviews that blending of chocolate and caramel  is one of my favorite things in the world. I wish it blended as well with the outer chocolate though.

The chocolate flavored nougat in the middle of the bar is the special kicker here. This nougat is very similar to a 3 Musketeers bar, only not quite as whipped or airy. Its got a bit of density, and a very nice chocolate flavor. Like all the best nougats it starts melting by the time its hit your tongue. What a marvelous experience.

Just look at the beautiful pull on that caramel! This is really great stuff, I highly recommend you pick up a Mars bar and enjoy a little piece of chocolate bar heaven. No wonder this is their signature chocolate.

A Drinkable Chocolate Bar

We all know about Nesquick (or just Quick if you live in certain places), but did you know that there are a few more chocolatey drinks on the store shelves these days? As I was walking the supermarket the other day I spotted some chocolate bar drinks, produced by Nestlé.

These may be common place, there's a few other flavors of this around as well (strawberry, banana maybe?), but how about a more direct chocolate bar drink?

Now these are looking good. caramel and coffee seem like natural fits for drinks, and pairing them with Nestle chocolate is a good idea. The only thing that might make these drinks better is if they were designed to be heated up.

I also stumbled on these Hershey chocolate milk drinks. Seems like pretty serious stuff. Especially the Double Chocolate one. Definitely preferable to Muscle Milk and the like.

Then as I was leaving I saw even more drinkable chocolate bars!

I'd definitely like to try some of that Caramilk drink. Sounds yummy!

I'll keep my eyes peeled for more drinkable chocolate bars. Let me know if you've seen more on your travels down the aisle.

Russell Stover Caramel Santa - video review

Today we continue our Christmas review with another Chocolate Santa, this time with the added bonus of caramel, lets look at the Russell Stover Caramel Santa.

For more on this please check out the full written review, or all of our reviews on the Reviews Page.

Russell Stover Caramel Santa review

Well its definitely getting closer and closer to that time of year, and today I've got another holiday chocolate review for you. We're looking at the Russell Stover Caramel Santa.

So this should be a relatively simple review, this is one of the many impulse item candies you'll see near the checkout this holiday season. And its pretty simple in concept too: chocolate and caramel. I firmly believe all you really need for a solid candy experience are these two items. Seriously, chocolate and caramel are so simple but can be so good when done right... lets just hope Russell Stover has it down this time.

Looking at the packaging I have to say I'm a fan. Its simple but effective. This is a chocolate Santa. I like that Santa is wearing the long robe / coat instead of Santa pants. It just seems more classic. And hey is that a spear Santa is holding?! Well it may look a bit like it but instead I think its probably a walking stick. This Santa is old school. No flying reindeer for this guy.

Other than that the package is pretty straightforward. Santa is walking into a Green night, atop a snowy field. Interesting that this actually isn't called a Caramel Santa on the packaging, but just Caramel... I guess they know what they want to emphasize. However if you look at the display pic above that I snapped in the store on the box it clearly says Santa. No big deal, I just thought it was a bit odd. Also and finally of note, there is a small message on the back of the package saying this is made with "real chocolate".

Getting into the packaging though we find that this chocolate looks more like some sort of vaguely person-shaped blob instead of anyone specific (much less Santa). I don't want to be disappointed by this... I mean I get it. But I still wish they had done something more with the look of this chocolate.

I will say this though, its thick, and smells good. Also the wavy lines across the top of the chocolate are nice, just not overly Santa-esque.

Biting into this chocolate though soundly does away with any lingering disappointment over the cosmetics. This is good. Seriously, its really good. The caramel is soft, gooey but not too sticky. Its not going to get overly stuck in my teeth, and it has a creamy, ever so slightly melty quality that about it helping it blend well with the chocolate. This is just about exactly the best way to eat caramel. Melted and mixed in with good quality chocolate. Everything here is really good.

Look, I won't say this is great. Its not Lindt, but it is better than most standard American chocolate fare, and for a quick deal at the checkout I don't think you can possibly go wrong here. Also these are the kind of things that go on super sale after Christmas, so keep an eye out. Even if you're paying the full dollar (ish) price though I think this is definitely worth the time and money. Check it out.

My Favorite Cookies

Why on earth don't we talk more about cookies here?!

I'm going to change that starting right now. Sure its technically not the candy aisle, but for a few posts I hope you'll indulge me. Now that I'm back living in Canada I've got a lot of old favorites to check in with again. I've already talked about my love for Viva Puffs, but here are a few other particular favorites.

I'll have more to say on The Decadent chocolate chip cookies soon, but these are not only a Canadian institution, they actually shook up the entire cookie market. For now, lets just leave it with the fact that these are easily the best mass produced commercially available Chocolate Chip Cookies on the market. They are awesome!

It's a classic for a reason. The Original Oreos are just amazing. there are so many good things to say about these. But as the picture says, eating them with milk is one of the best. Everything about an Oero works. Its just delicious all over.

I love Viva Puffs. I know most of you probably haven't had them, but this is easily my most favorite thing in the world containing marshmallow. Yes even more than smores, yes even more than rice crispy squares; Viva Puffs are that good. And as a bonus, they are not only delicious but they are so much fun to eat! There's a lot of layers to a Viva Puff, and its all good.

Man Fudgee-O... I wish I could've eaten these more often as a child. For some reason my parents never seemed to want to get them. Wow these are great though. You want chocolatey goodness? this is the place. Hands down just the best chocolate cookie out there.

Wagon Wheels aren't something to eat everyday. In fact I'd suggest even if you love them to keep it to only special occasions. Almost a desert rather than a cookie snack, wagon wheels live in my mind somewhere around the same place a cookie ice cream sandwich does. They are fantastic, but I think I might like them a little bit less if I could have them all the time.

As a child Peak Freans Fruit Creme biscuits held the spot as my favorite cookie for a very long time. The cream is much softer than an Oeros frosting like substance. This i the kind of cream that will melt in your mouth. The cookie is also something that will eventually melt away. Then all you're left with is the amazing center of gummy jam with sugar coating it. These are practically perfect in every way.

The great thing about Fig Newtons, is that they're practically not even a cookie. I mean I actually knew kids whose moms would give them these to eat as a healthy snack! They're deceptive for sure. Not as sweet as a regular cookie, but I have to say I love how Fig Newtons crumble away in your mouth, and the figs are absolutely great. Getting a fig newton is something a lot of kids won't appreciate; but for those of us who like them it feels like we've just gotten away with a huge coup.

Finally Chips Ahoy! chewy. Now I absolutely never had these at my house as a child. I'm not sure if maybe they weren't available back then in Canada or what. But... that doesn't make sense. They must've been around. I definitely had them when I could, it was just very rare. Whenever I did get them though I was in heaven. I think regular Chips Ahoy! are fine and all, but the Chewy variety is just SO good. As an adult they taste a little too processed, but as a kid these were that bomb. If only I could find them :)

Well, that about wraps it up for me on the cookie front. I'm sure there's a few I'm forgetting, but there's a decent selection. Let me know what your favorite cookies are in the comments.
And now, I'm going to eat a cookie, this post has made me very hungry.
